I am an Associate Professor at Georgia State University coordinating the Deaf Education undergraduate, masters, and doctoral programs. Prior to joining higher education, I was a high school teacher at the Alaska School for the Deaf and a K-8 reading specialist at The Learning Center for the Deaf.
Part of my career at Georgia State University has focused on re-imagining the Deaf Education programs to move away from a deficit model of deafness and instead approach deaf education from an asset-oriented stance. This means, among other things, using multilingual teaching and working to ensure that all deaf children have access to a signed language from birth.
In terms of research, my interests are at the nexus of language, literacy, and the use of signed languages. I am widely published both within the major Deaf Education journals (American Annals of the Deaf, Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education) and in more generalist academic journals. I currently serve on the editorial board of Journal of Deaf Studies and Deaf Education, and will soon serve as one of three inaugural editors for a research-to-practice section of American Annals of the Deaf.
